I’ve been thinking lately about what a web site needs in the most general of senses.  A topic that comes up a lot is the importance of design and functionality, which is greater.  Well, in my opinion, a great design is a given, your site has to look great, but it also has to be easy to use, navigate and be functional, interactive and give your customers/users a reason to use and stay on the web site.

You cannot just design a nice looking site, slap on some generic marketing material that we’ve all read a million times and call it a day. You’ve got to think about your content, make sure its worded just right and that you’re not overwhelming your customers with excessive information.  Your web site in most cases is a call to action and a reference for your customers.  Your web site needs also needs to be interactive, get your customers engaged in their experience with you online.  Think about this for a moment, when a potential customers learns of your company or service the first thing they want to do is learn some information about your business, what you do, what you charge, when you started, what you offer, etc.  The first place they’ll look is your web site, they can do it in their own time and without any pressure.  Its a somewhat leisurely activity.  You don’t want your customers to have to work to use your web site to get basic informationa nd you also don’t want to bore them to death with inside jargon and extra information that nobody cares about except you.  Think about what your customer wants and needs, and organize your site appropriately.  Your web site can cost you business just as easy as it can gain you business.  Would you setup your store front or office to be plain white, no friendly personnel and a bunch of Xeroxed flyers on the walls for them to peruse?  No, you wouldn’t, so why should your web site be any different?  Think about that first contact your customer has with your company in person, when a sales person calls on them, how much effort do you put into planning out those processes and experiences?  Your web site is no different at all, its just as important and in many cases even more so.  How many times a day do you refer your customers to your online literature, or say “Check out our web site at blahblah.com”?  It should be a pleasant, visually pleasing, simple to navigate, interactive, information and engaging experience.  If you’re not doing this now or don’t know where to start you can call us at 563-823-1114, we’ll be glad to help.

Happy Webbing.
