A lot of you may have received an e-mail from me lately, or simply read about this on the web. Google has a great offering entitled “Google Sitemaps”, essentially its an XML document with a listing of all the pages on your site. Why is this blog worthy? Essentially a site map, is exactly what it sounds like its a map of every page on your site, the URL to the page, the last time it was updated and the frequency in which its updated. For instance, I use a sitemap on this site and all my blog articles are listed. The blog home page is listed as updating daily, because it changes almost daily. We can add this to your site for fairly nominal price. The Google Sitemap is definitely worthy of adding, because it ensures every page is indexed by Google, but it does not necessarily help with page rank in anyway. As an example, a client of mine has about 1,600 pages on his site. Only 38 were indexed (or listed) by Google….that means even though they have lots of great content and information only 38 of those pages were shown in Google! So we built him a site map now all the pages are indexing and because of the SEO already performed on those pages his page rank has increased.
